WHAT A CORKER!

Flamboro Mix & Brew House has been collecting natural corks for recycling!  The money raised from this recycling effort is being matched by Flamboro Mix & Brew and graciously donated to our club Soroptimist Intl. of Dundas~Ancaster~Flamborough to help women and girls locally.  Everyone is welcome to collect their corks and bring them to Flamboro Mix & Brew House which is located just north of Waterdown at 1099 Highway #6 (at 5th Conc. W)  to aid in this recycling and fundraising effort.

CORK FYI: Did you know that cork is a natural renewable resource that can easily be recycled? Did you know that synthetic corks put further demands on our oil resources but demand for natural cork maintains an environmentally friendly and renewable source of clean air, natural habitat for animals as well as supports family businesses spanning many generations.

Hasty Notes for Sale

Our Soroptimist group has Hasty Note Cards for sale. The box sets are 6 cards, blank inside with envelopes. The images were generously donated by two photographers: Peter Self from Dundas and Gillian Sheldon of Burlington, and the project made possible by a grant from the Rotary Club of Waterdown. No prices are advertised on the box set itself.

We encourage you to get a few sets – they are great as stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, employee gifts, and “grand theft gift” or “secret santa” games, or to be enjoyed as cards to reconnect with a friend.

They are available for sale: $10 each or three sets for $25. Shipping is not included. Cheques can be made to SI-DAF - please send orders by email (soroptimistdaf@gmail.com) and include your contact information to arrange for pick up/delivery.

Annual Christmas Auction

Our annual Christmas “Loonie Toonie Auction” was held November 17th at St. Thomas Parish Hall in Waterdown, and once again it was a smashing success! With over 180 beautifully arranged gift baskets and prizes, there was something for everyone, including the Christmas shopper in all of us this time of the year. Some of the most sought-after items included a vacation in ski country, theatre tickets, diamond jewellery, and of course wine, wine and more wine! Our Soroptimist sisters worked hard to ensure an organized and fun evening by decorating the hall, greeting newcomers and returning guests at the door (and helping them fill their pockets with loonies and toonies!), calling the auction numbers (a job not for the faint of heart!), and handing out prizes to the winners. Once again this year, we were delighted that the winner of the Wine Fridge was a member of the audience.

This year there was a more open atmosphere, with displays of baskets along the walls, and an undivided hall where everyone could cheer on the winners. And cheer they did! The excitement kept building throughout the night, and it was wonderful to hear the laughter and just plain fun at all of the tables! Many of us heard the positive comments from our tables (especially about the delicious catered hot food and chocolate desserts), and promises to return to the auction next year. What a wonderful opportunity to show the value of Soroptimism to the community.

Many thanks to our young volunteers who helped make the evening a success by shepherding guests to their tables, handing out bottles of water, and clearing the tables as the night went on. You helped the evening go smoothly, and your assistance was much appreciated. Thanks go out as well to Kerry Jarvi, past president and former member of SI-DAF, who once again was the ultimate auctioneer! And to our sponsors and donors, our heartfelt appreciation for their support to SIDAF and programs for women and girls.

Best of all, we surpassed last year’s efforts by bringing in over $15,000; money that will help us support so many wonderful programs for women and girls in our communities!

Congratulations to the members of the Fundraising Committee for a spectacular and successful event. Truly, we are “women at their best, helping other women to be their best”!

2009 Loonie Toonie Auction

Well ladies, we did it! On November 18th, SIDAF held its annual Loonie Toonie Auction, and it was a great success. Although the tickets didn’t sell out completely this year (largely due to the economy), the tables were all populated with enthusiastic supporters of the event. For the second year running, St. Thomas parish hall in Waterdown proved the perfect venue, with lots of space to display our auction items to the best effect. There were over 125 items on offer, running the gamut from “Pamper Yourself” gift baskets to beautiful Grandfather Clocks.

The catered hot meal was a hit this year, and drew many compliments from the crowd. As an auction neophyte, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the evening, but was delighted by the festive atmosphere, the gales of laughter from the tables, and the squeals of delight from the successful bidders. It didn’t seem to matter whether it was a major gift or a small door prize; the joy of one’s number being called seemed to be just the same. I heard several first-time attendees commenting on how much fun they were having, and promising to bring more of their girlfriends along next year. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make the event such a success (including the helpful young men who fetched and carried for us, and ushered everyone to their tables).

Congratulations to Kerry Jarvi and all of our Fundraising Committee for a smoothly run evening (and kudos to M.C. Kerry for making her voice last to the final auction item!) Heartfelt thanks as well to our sponsors and donors. Sales of tickets to win the wine fridge with bottles of wine boosted our total profits this year, and it was wonderful that although the majority of tickets were pre-sold, the winner was in the audience on auction night.

Amazingly, we managed to surpass last year’s auction total, taking in over $10,000! That money will help fund the many wonderful projects of SIDAF, and allow us to carry out our mission of “women at their best, helping other women to be their best”.

Cash for Gold

Ever thought you should clean out your jewellery box but don’t want to go to Toronto to see some guy on tv OR who would trust a mail in company?  Does relaxing at a friends house, enjoying a refreshment or two, chat a bit, have an appetizer or two and when you go home, leave with more money then you came with sound better?  Well now there is Gold Party Princess!

What is Gold Party Princess?  You may have seen them on CTV, Global or in the newspaper, Gold Party Princess is an opportunity for you to turn unwanted gold (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold & Platinum) into CASH!  That is right, you are invited to come to a fun social evening where you won’t have to buy anything and you will be selling your unwanted gold items.

Sandy & Brooke are co-hosting the event on July 31 and we will have a qualified rep from Gold Party Princess who will evaluate & weigh your gold and offer you money on the spot!  You can bring broken chains, single earrings, stuff from your ex-boyfriend, dented jewellery or even gold teeth; jewellery with stones can also be evaluated and stones can sometimes be removed on the spot.

A prize will be awarded for the gaudiest piece of jewellery, weirdest item or the best story.  Valid government issued identification (like a drivers license) will be necessary to sell your gold as this is a requirement when dealing with second hand goods.

Refreshments will be served!  You may bring a friend, but you must RSVP as soon as possible as space is limited.

This is a community service event by Soroptimist International of Dundas, Ancaster Flamborough and Gold Party Princess will also make a contribution to our club!  If you can not make this event but would have liked to, we plan to host one again in January.

Thank you to the RWTO

SI-DAF President, Barb McCoy, spoke about the Soroptimist organization to the Retired Women’s Teachers of Ontraio. Barb did an excellent job of speaking at their Breakfast by the Bay meeting at Geraldo’s at La Salle Park on May 13th. Following the meeting, a donation was collected and shared between Soroptimist and a local women’s shelter. We’d like to thank them for their generous donation of $255.70.

Retired Women’s Teachers of Ontario (RWTO: Hamilton- Wentworth branch) organization continues to “extend a helping hand to organizations and charities that are assisting women and children” as well as providing a strong communication network and opportunities for interaction among retired women teachers.

FootPRINT Fund Award

Thanks to Brooke, S.I. DAF was the recipient of the FootPRINT Award yesterday at the Spectator building. Sandy and I received $500.00 on behalf of the club, to use towards design/printing service costs.

Allegra Print & Imaging gave out 58 awards today, worth a total of $20,000.00 locally and 2 million dollars nationwide. We are thankful for this gift and hope to request this again next year, possibly for a special project. (By the way, my employer only received $250 so I think our proposal was well received Brooke).

Special thanks also to the Flamborough Review & the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce for helping publicize our event.  With the help of all of our generous supporting businesses and attendees, we managed to raise over $3,500.00 for women & girls in our community!

It was also wonderful to see everyone pitch in and help. I loved the record theme…it created a wonderful atmosphere the moment you entered the room. I would say our dance was highly successful and hopefully the word is out on the incredible events S.I. DAF organizes.

Again congratulation to all for another outstanding fundraiser!
Barb
